A Simpler Multiplayer Backend

If you've evaluated PlayFab, Photon, Nakama or GameSparks and found them too complex, too expensive, or gone entirely — Multiplayer API covers the same core lifecycle with one REST API and five official SDKs.

vs PlayFab

PlayFab is a large Azure microservices suite — powerful but sprawling, with per-feature pricing meters and an ecosystem developers increasingly worry about after Microsoft's 2025 studio layoffs. We cover the core lifecycle indie and mid-size games actually use — accounts, rooms, matchmaking, leaderboards, friends, data storage — as a single documented REST API with flat monthly pricing and no Azure account required.

Choose PlayFab for: LiveOps tooling, economy/catalog systems, enterprise Azure integration. Choose us for: getting a real game online in a day, predictable cost, and code your AI assistant can write for you.

vs Photon

Photon is excellent realtime netcode — but it's a networking layer, not a backend. Accounts, leaderboards, moderation and persistent player data still need another service behind it. Multiplayer API gives you the whole backend plus a dual-channel realtime layer (WebSocket control + UDP fast lane) in one account, for games that don't need Photon's specialized relay scale.

Choose Photon for: competitive real-time shooters at scale. Choose us for: complete backend + realtime in one place.

vs Nakama

Nakama is the leading open-source game backend — but "open source" means you run it: Postgres, cluster config, upgrades, on-call. Heroic Cloud hosting starts far above indie budgets. If you want Nakama's feature set as a managed service without DevOps, that's exactly what we host.

Choose Nakama for: full source ownership and custom server logic. Choose us for: zero infrastructure to run.

GameSparks migrations

GameSparks shut down in September 2022, leaving live games scrambling for a backend on short notice. If your project still carries GameSparks-shaped player, room and leaderboard calls, our REST surface maps cleanly onto them — and the migration path is a rewrite of the client SDK calls, not your game design.
